Seattle SuperSonics : The Sonics signed Turkish shooting guard Ibrahim Kutluay, who lit up the United States Olympic team in a pair of exhibition games this summer.
Terms were not disclosed for Kutluay, 30, who signed Wednesday. He could make the roster as a replacement for sharpshooting reserve Richie Frahm, who left via free agency.
The 6-6 Kutluay averaged 14 points per game last season for from Ulker Spor Kulbu Istanbul. As captain of the Turkish national team, he made 12-of-23 3-pointers while scoring 19 and 26 points in two losses to Team USA in August.
"At 30 years old and as the leader of his national team, Ibrahim brings international experience and veteran leadership to one of the youngest teams in the NBA," SuperSonics general manager Rick Sund said. "He’s a great catch-and-shoot player. Because we’re one of the best shooting teams in the league, his style of play fits in perfectly."
Currently playing for Turkey in the 2005 European Championships qualifying round, Kutluay will join the Sonics when training camp opens October 5.
