ISTANBUL, (Anadolu Agency) - Turkish police seized 83.1 kilograms of heroin in a joint operation staged in Turkish metropolis of Istanbul and the Netherlands, Tufan Erguder, the Director of Istanbul Narcotics Department, said on Saturday.
Erguder told reporters that three Turks were arrested with 48 kilograms of heroin in Dutch capital of Amsterdam on August 27th, 2004 within the framework of a joint operation of Turkish and Dutch police.
Members of this illicit drug trafficking network in Turkey were followed in line with the testimonies of the captured three Turks, Erguder said.
Erguder noted, ’’82 kilograms of heroin was seized in an operation staged in Fatih, Istanbul on October 19th, 2004. 11 people were arrested in the operation.’’
One person in connection with the same network was captured with one kilogram of heroin in the Netherlands on October 20th, 2004, a day after the operation in Turkey, Erguder stated.
Erguder noted, ’’evidence we have gained during this last operation has shown that this illicit drug trafficking network was the continuation of those which were deciphered during the previous two operations. Thus, 131 kilograms of heroin was confiscated, and 15 members of the illicit drug trafficking network were arrested in these operations staged in Istanbul and (southeastern city of) Gaziantep and the Netherlands.’’
OTHER OPERATIONS-
Erguder said that police had confiscated 60 kilograms of heroin and arrested five people in an operation staged against another illicit drug trafficking network in Zeytinburnu, Istanbul.
Also, 45 kilograms of heroin was seized and four people were captured in a third operation in Umraniye, Istanbul, Erguder noted.
Erguder added that 236.1 kilograms of heroin was confiscated and 24 people were detained in the above mentioned three operations.
