A deputy in the Justice and Development Party (AKP), Seyfi Terzibasioglu, criticized the assumption that tourism is only for the sea, sun, and sand and demanded more attention for cultural tourism.
Terzibasioglu said yesterday that Turkey could earn $3 billion annually from cultural tourism.
The AKP Deputy speaks from experience. He conducted many studies during his experience as a deputy in the tourism sector and added that many people travel to Turkey to see and live the culture.
"We have only one Istanbul, it is a world city full of palaces. I often go abroad. I look at the places I visit as a deputy of a tourism city. I visit palaces, museums, and culturally focused places. I noticed that we can’t make Istanbul an asset. 2,000,000 people annually visit Schöenbrunn Palace in Vienna. The entrance is between 7.5 and 15 euros. It is not even an issue among our Dolmabahce Palace."
Terzibasioglu said that a huge project was needed to evaluate Turkey’s potential as a destination for cultural tourists.
