ANKARA, Dec 4 (AFP) - A moderate earthquake measuring 4.4 on the open-ended Richter scale shook the eastern Turkish province of Erzurum on Saturday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties, the Anatolia news agency reported.
The tremor stuck at 12:16 (1016 GMT) with an epicenter in the town of Kandilli, the Istanbul-based Kandilli seismological institute said.
The NTV news channel said the quake, which was also felt in neighbouring provinces, led to brief panic among residents.
Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, where some 20,000 people were killed in two massive tremors in 1999.
