Ankara, Turkey, (UPI) — Turkey has deported two North Korean diplomats for allegedly smuggling a synthetic amphetamine or stimulant into the nation, the BBC reported Friday.
Ryang Thae Won and Kim Son Jin were caught Sunday in a police raid in Istanbul, officials said.
Police say the pair, who have diplomatic immunity, brought a large number of pills from Bulgaria, where they are based, and delivered them to two Turks, who were arrested in the Istanbul raid.
Authorities described the pills as Captagon, a synthetic amphetamine-type stimulant. The pair was driven Tuesday to Bulgaria.
Ankara recognizes North Korea, but Pyongyang does not have an embassy in Turkey, choosing instead to use its Bulgrian embassy to handle Turkish affairs.
